It does sound as though you might have a personal perspective on the attitudes and frustrations of the characters in the book - how close to the real thing? Thanks for dropping by and adding your input.Manuel Ramoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10360072661844419063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9367921.post-1154146528328574742006-07-28T22:15:00.000-06:002006-07-28T22:15:00.000-06:00OK, the gauntlet is down. I will purposefully go where no other fool would tread; comment on a review of a book, I have NOT EVEN READ!!

I have a 22-year old chicanito. Sometimes mi jefita and I turn to look at each other, after el chivo does something that perplexes our grown up sensibilities and wonder how he came to be this way! Do not get me wrong, he has never brought disrespect to the family. He is kind and loving to a fault. I suppose what I am getting at is that our 2nd born, resembles the character Miguel. He too can stare into the distance until he almost disappears from view. He is built like a sloth, massive, with a stealth only possible after more than 5 years of skateboarding (imagine a 300 pound kid on a skateboard). His pores exude a steely apprehensiveness, disquiet soberness, quickly turning into a smile that only an artist can portray! Este es mi hijo. Rock hard opinions, a gothic sense of style as he moves through life wearing black T-shirts and allowing his jet-black (already going gray) hair hang like a curtain around his brown face. We figure that when he reaches 34 years of age, like his Dad, he will come to the ultimate conclusion that life realy does suck. Carlitos will use his immense talents (inherited of course)with a confidence born of experience and the forever prodding from his parents to take his place in the vecindad.

Unlike Miguel, my youngest, was not raised in the golden ghetto. Unlike Miguel's Dad, I have managed to stay out of jail. Quite possibly because I won at least 25 get out of jail cards from Sister Christine Joseph; or were they plenuary indulgences? Carlos Ruben has never seen la Llorona, but has been heavily influenced by "EL Cucui"! Now what is spooky are the kids he hangs with. All outkasts, haters of Britney, Christina, all things pop. Not head bangers but head hangers, using their atttitude as a sheild to keep intimacy at bay. They are young, like newly hatched salmon thrashing their way to the sea and the immensity de la vida moderna that is found there.

The character Miguel originating from Gilbert Hernandez's pen, as interpreted by your succinct review, represent an archetypal jovencito, jovencita, waking up to days that are no escape from the night. I would venture to say that when I do read this librito, it will rekindle episodes of deja vu,a feeling I have not had since joining the Corporate elite.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
