What could be done differently, the hour aside?

I'm sure Reyna and the sponsors are doing their operations report lessons learned assessments to make next year's event all the better. In terms of the number and quality of panels, Reyna and her staff kept their promise, they produced the best Latino Book & Family Festival ever. Welcome back to
Texas after your years in Califas!
Thank you for being a voice
for Children and for those who write
books for kids. Two of my
favorites are "Pelitos/Hair"
by Sandra Cisneros and also
(dare I mention Dr. Seuss?):
"Huevos Verdes con Jamon)!
It's even better in Spanish.
This reminds me of the film
"Jamon, Jamon" with Penelope
Cruz. I asked for the title
at the store y no me comprendieron.
Then a light went on and the
employee said: "Oh! You mean
"Jamming, Jamming"!
A Texas topic for kids that
highlights the Hispanic history
of Texas and Louisiana is the
"Capital de la Provincia de Texas".
Los Adaes (now in Louisiana) was
once (for over forty years) the
Capital de la Provincia de Texas!
Have our Texas public school
kids ever heard of "Los Adaes"? This
town was a Presidio and a
Mission settlement. It was the
terminus for El Camino Real. Is
this taught in Texas schools?
At Los Adaes French and Spanish
were spoken. The French, the
Spanish, and the native American
Adais tribe all got along. They
seem to have lived in harmony. And
then The Vice Roy in Mexico City
moved the Capital elsewhere ---
maybe to San Antonio.
Why do the Pilgrims get the
credit in our schools for the
First Thankgiving? Wasn't the
first Thanksgiving in St. Augustine, Florida? Or was it in
what is now New Mexico?
Hispanic Heritage matters.
Our kids need to take pride in who
they are. They need to be connected to their heritage ----
all of it.
When he was teaching at the
University of Texas --- Octavio Paz told a group of students:
"We all have a heritage. Parts
of it are good. And there are
things that happened that were not
right --- such as Tlatelolco.
We need to treasure and accept
the Heritage that is ours."
Saludos de Juan Sanchez

p.s. Ben Saenz (who writes for
kids) quotes (in his book
"Elegies In Blue" one of my
favorite verses by Jose Marti:

"Con los pobres de la tierra
quiero yo mi suerte echar.
El arroyo de la sierra
me complace mas que el mar."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
