Is the Califas - Tejas beef still dividing our chance at cultural unity in Aztlan?

Here is what Jim Mendiola, San Antonio filmmaker and head of Cinefestival wrote on Facebook:

#Encuentro2014, a one-month national gathering of Latino theater groups, starts this week in Los Angeles. It is an important encuentro long overdue. But absent from the 19 plus theater companies and the stories to be told are any Texas representatives. Texas is a state with 10 million Latinos, ground zero for issues ranging from the Central American child refugees to narco wars on the border to restrictive voter ID laws, and with a long history of Teatro Chicano. The last national gathering of Latino theater companies in fact took place at the Guadalupe Theater in San Antonio in 1992. And it was at that encuentro that a Tejano teatro proudly staged the second production ever of Cherrie Moraga’s Heroes and Saints. Any attempt to begin a national conversation on present-day Latinos as expressed through the power of theater is incomplete without the participation of a significant demographic and historical segment of this country's brown population. It’s hard to imagine a glaring omission like this happening at that inclusive, long ago ’92 TENAZ conference, a gathering that included queer voices, Latina voices, Mexican voices, Latin American voices, and companies from New York, California, Colorado, the Midwest and other places.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9367921.post-83565044660460754252014-10-15T06:36:08.620-06:002014-10-15T06:36:08.620-06:00What a wonderful issue!
