“Let’s collaborate online…abuelita”

Across the world, two people sit on two computers to video-chat, share documents, and watch a few presentations. They discuss the content, one of them asks questions, they review it several times, they laugh, they interact, and then… when they finish their meeting one of them says… “Good night sweetheart…abuelita loves you…”

 “With FamilyClick, we decided to give families the same opportunity that big corporations have: interact in real-time in a fun way,” explained Mari Tere Molinet, Latina mother and co-Founder of FamilyClick a new website focused on creating real-time bridges for families living apart.

According to the latest US Census data, not only are there more than 50 million Hispanics in the United States, but this population is beginning to spread out within the country. Currently, only 75% of Hispanics in the United States live in the traditional Hispanic states, compared to 81% in 2000.

The Hispanic population has doubled in states like Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina, among other. This shift means that more Hispanic families migrate, not only from the country of origin, but also from their original state.

In the past 10 years, according to the UN data, the number of people living outside their country of origin grew two times faster than the general population: 25%. Globalization changed the rules of the game, even for family relationships: now internet has new interactive alternatives to help create bonds, even beyond any distance.

“For instance, if we have a kid talking with his grandma, they both can paint in the same drawing board together while they talk. They can even save the drawing and print it to keep as a souvenir,” says Molinet.

In FamilyClick, families can create their unique private group where they can read books, draw pictures and even watch videos together while they talk face to face with the video-chat. All the members of the private group can manage the content that the whole group will see. 

 “Having a fun way to keep a good connection between our kids and our families was very important for us, that´s when we started to develop FamilyClick”, says Molinet who lived as an expat for more than a decade while working for CNN, Univision and Discovery.

The groups created in FamilyClick are private. Only the owner of the group can invite people to join, and she has to do it via email, since there is no way for you to look for people and send unwanted invites.

“We decided that since we were focusing on family connections, privacy and security was a must. We designed the website in such a way that we don’t have intrusive advertisement or predators sending unwanted “be my friend” requests,” added Molinet.

The website is also developed in its entirety in both, English and Spanish. It has a book and video library with content in Spanish and English from 9 different countries.

In a globalized world, collaboration online is the new name of the game: people sharing meetings and documents online and working together in real-time from anywhere in the world. But now this is not only for companies.
