TQS: 45 Years of Chicana Chicano Literature
http://quintosolremembered.wordpress.com/
On behalf of the Quinto Sol Remembered (QSR) organizing committee, we want to invite you to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Quinto Sol, the first Chicana Chicano Publishing House in the country, and its interdisciplinary magazine “El Grito”, which was founded in 1967 with the efforts of UC Berkeley students and faculty.
Quinto Sol Publishing and its journal El Grito made an unprecedented effort to create a space for Chicanas Chicanos to publish their literary, artistic, and scholarly works in the late 1960s. Many of the texts that are now considered foundational and canonical first saw light in El Grito and/or were published by El Quinto Sol Publishing via their Quinto Sol prize.
The persons behind this effort were associated with UC Berkeley as undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty; including the late professor Octavio Romano. The purpose of this conference is not only to celebrate that moment in Chicanas Chicanos/UC Berkeley History but also to take a critical look at that moment in order to understand in which directions our art, literature, and scholarship can proceed.
