The University of La Verne
held its first Latino Education Access and Development (LEAD) Conference in
September of 2012 to great success. The all-day event, designed to help Latino
students from middle school through college age achieve their goals, brings
together various Latino organizations. Hundreds of students learn about
leadership and scholarship opportunities and about mentorship. "Our goal
is to connect and build stronger relations with organization designed to
support Latino students," said University Spokeswoman Alisha Rosas.
Latino Literacy Now
feels strongly that LEAD's goals closely match its own. "It's a great new
association for us," says Latino Literacy Now's Executive Director Jim
Sullivan. "We were approached during the recent Inland Empire Latino Book
& Family Festival about a joint endeavor. It makes a lot of sense to hold a
Latino Author Summit alongside the established LEAD conference this
year."
Plans are also underway to
also hold a small "Feria" adjacent to the LEAD/Author Summit
activities. There will be a stage, food trucks and a limited amount of space
for a controlled number of appropriate exhibitors. There will also be two
seminar tracks that should be of interest to all family members: Planning for
College and Becoming an Author.
Confirmed speakers include
Ernesto R. Caravantes, Thelma T. Reyna, Daniel Olivas, René Colato Laínez, Yolanda
Espinoza, Estella Gonzalez, Myriam Gurba, in addition to many other
accomplished and interesting guests.
Also, the Latino Books
into Movies awards will take place during the Latino Author Summit. If you
submitted an entry into these awards - and are named a finalist - you will be
notified in time to make plans to attend the ceremony.
The complete Summit
schedule will be available on this page soon. There are
also very limited opportunities for sponsorship of this special day. Call Jim
Sullivan at 858-603-8680 for more information. Or email him directly at jim@LBFF.us.
