María L. Gutiérrez, a former bilingual teacher who taught for almost 40 years, comes from a large immigrant family. She was born in Oxnard, California, but her family moved back to Mexico when she was four. A graduate of California State University, Fresno and California State University, Northridge, she lives in Santa Paula, California.
Nicole Montenegro, a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, is a children’s book illustrator based in North Carolina.
