My father-in-law's medals. |
My grandmother lined a whole wall with portraits of her six veterans. She was grateful her husband and sons returned home alive. She was proud of them. My mother was so patriotic, her one regret in life was not enlisting. I've never had such a wish. The fact that I am married to a veteran is incidental. When I think about Veterans Day, my mind remembers the wall of veterans, my mother's brothers and a folded flag belonging to the family friend who didn't make it back. Was it too painful for his own mother to look at the carefully folded flag?
