As follow up to the dialogue on cultural appropriation and
latinos in speculative fiction, I've got more. First, check out spec
novelist A. Lee Martinez's post on diversity, where he writes:
"Fantasy and science fiction
could use some diversity, both in its creators and its stories. It’s
still worth talking about. More ethnic diversity would certainly be welcome. It is a sad state of affairs when the most ethnically diverse cast in
mainstream science fiction is found in Star Trek movies, all based on a
TV show from the 60′s." Go here to read and leave comments.
18
years of multicultural books not up
Publisher Lee and Low Books was
also mentioned in my two-part report on Chicanos/latinos in publishing. By coincidence,
they released a report entitled:
"Why Hasn’t the Number of Multicultural Books
Increased In Eighteen Years?"
They asked
academics, authors, librarians, educators and reviewers this question. Although
I don't know if they asked any latino professionals, you can go here to see the
stats from the Children's Book Center and comments at Lee and Low.
Halloween writing contest

Call for Paranormal submissions
The Corner Club Press
is still looking for submissions for their Paranormal-themed issue. They seek
poetry, flash fiction and short stories up to 5k words. Previously published
work will be considered, as long as the author owns the publishing rights.
Check their guidelines here and send submissions to thecornerclubpress@gmail.com with "Paranormal
Submission" in the subject line.
Es todo, hoy,
