The Garry Marshall Theatre is interested in new works that are uniquely theatrical, authentically voiced, and have a strong point of view. The New Works Festival presents five new plays in virtual readings to support the development process of the playwright, and is designed to allow these five playwright finalists to join forces with professional directors and actors in their development process.
This year, the Garry Marshall Theatre presented the five finalist playwrights in livestream virtual readings in a festival weekend of September 23 to 25. Each of the five selected scripts was paired with Los Angeles actors and directors for an 8 to 12 hour rehearsal process that culminated in five virtual, concert-style readings. Additionally, finalist playwrights were invited to engage with the director prior to this period of exploration with actors.
I was honored to be one of the five finalists for my play, Waiting for Godínez. My play was inspired by the last administration’s family separation immigration policy and the iconic Samuel Beckett play, Wating for Godot. Directed by Dr. Daphnie Sicre, my play had the following cast:
JESÚS (CHUY): Raul Vega
Martinez
ISABEL (CHAVALITA):
Valentina Guerra
AFORTUNADA: Shanelle
Darlene
PISO: Amir Levi
CHILD: Carolina J. Flores
STAGE DIRECTIONS: Mondara Granados Carreiro
If you missed the live reading of my play, you’re in luck! The Garry Marshall Theatre is making available for a limited time a recording of the entire play along with the discussion afterwards. You may watch my play by clicking this link. Enjoy!
