Ariadna Sánchez Hernández, poeta nacida en Oaxaca, México, despunta en el mundo de las letras con su conmovedor poemario Visitas inesperadas, que en 2024 fue galardonado con el International Latino Book Award en la categoría de Poesía. Su más reciente proyecto es el libro infantil La jugada del día, inspirado en la vida del beisbolista oriundo de Ejutla de Crespo, Juan Manuel Sánchez Sánchez, quien fuera su padre. Este es el proyecto más personal de Ariadna, ya que a través de este libro busca que la historia de su padre, quien amaba el béisbol y su comunidad, trascienda fronteras y motive a los pequeños lectores a ir en busca de sus metas. Además, es licenciada en Español, Lengua y Cultura por California State University, Northridge (CSUN), donde continúa su camino literario como estudiante de maestría en Español.

Ariadna Sánchez Hernández es una poeta que florece en cada estrofa, bañada de sol y esperanza, pintando poesía más allá de la frontera. Sus poemas han sido publicados en prestigiosos medios impresos y electrónicos tales como la revista infantil, Iguana, La Raíz Magazine, Xinachtli Journal-Journal X, Oaxaca Profundo, y La Bloga y Los Bloguitos. También contribuyó en el libro El Sistema: Music for Social Change por Christine Witkowski, ha sido promotora de la lectura en Oaxaca y en Los Ángeles a través del proyecto Líderes En Acción (LEA) y publicó su primer libro bilingüe H is for HOLA. Tamalitos

Happy Holidays! Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends surrounded by the spirit of love, peace and happiness. Christmas is an occasion filled with hope, good wishes and delicious food.

Today’s book is Tamalitos written by the award winning Salvadoran poet and writer Jorge Telt Argueta and illustrated by Domi. To read the poems in this book is a succulent experience. Reading Tamalitos today could turn your Christmas evening into a delicious family moment. Argueta’s delightful poems are an invitation to embrace the importance of traditions with a tasty approach. Each poem guides the young reader to get involved in the art of making a unique and appetizing tamal.

Tamales first appeared in the early 7000 B.C. in Pre-Columbian history when the Aztec women served as cooks for the armies during battles. There was a need to have a more portable yet sustainable food and the tamales could be made ahead of time, packed and warmed as needed.

Tamales have changed in size, color, shape, and filling, depending on the location and the resources available. The wrappings varied from cornhusks, to soft tree bark, to edible leaves, such as those from avocados and bananas.  A tamalis mainly composed of masa (hominy flour dough) spread on a corn shuck and filled with either chicken, pork, beef, green chile, cheese, or, more recently, vegetables.

The preparation of tamales is time and labor consuming. The tamale making process takes almost all day and preparations often start one or two days prior. Some families associated the tamales with the Christmas holidays and some other special occasions. 

Today, the influence of the tamales has expanded beyond the Latino community and is loved by all cultures. If you or your family is having tamales for dinner, hopefully you will appreciate not only the time and effort that went into making them, but also the history behind it.

Spanish Review: Telegramas al Cielo- La infancia de monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero

La niñez es una etapa de formación y crecimiento. Sin duda alguna, determina en gran medida el futuro de las personas.  Tal es el caso del admirado monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero. Su niñez esta plasmada en el libro bilingüe titulado Telegramas al Cielo: La infancia de monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, por el afamado escritor salvadoreño René Colato Laínez e ilustrado por Pixote Hunt. La casa editorial Luna’s Press Book ha hecho posible que miles de familias lean y aprendan sobre la candidez y generosidad de Monseñor Romero.   

Oriundo de Ciudad Barrios, San Salvador; el pequeño Óscar trabajaba en la oficina de correos y telegramas que estaba en su casa. Creciendo entre botones de máquinas y mensajes que iban y venían con noticias de todo tipo, Óscar recorría velozmente las calles de su pueblo para entregar los telegramas. Su vocación de sacerdote se manifestó a muy temprana edad cuando rezaba junto a sus padres sus oraciones. Movido por su deseo de ayudar a otros, Óscar desea enviar un telegrama al cielo. Su mejor medio para hacer llegar ese telegrama hasta las alturas, es a través de la oración, por lo que el pequeño Óscar reza con fervor y fe siendo este solo el principio de su magnifica vida sacerdotal.

Movido por la esperanza y su amor por la iglesia, Óscar a los 13 años de edad ingresa al seminario menor de la ciudad de San Miguel. Su ejemplar conducta y sus buenas calificaciones lo hicieron merecedor de terminar sus estudios religiosos en Roma, Italia. Años mas tarde, Óscar llega nuevamente a su querido pueblo Ciudad Barrios para celebrar su primera misa. Los habitantes del pueblo estaban alegres de recibir a uno de los suyos en la comunidad.  Un ejemplo de humildad, servicio a la comunidad y de entrega hacia los mas necesitados eran solo algunas de las características del querido y recordado Monseñor Óscar Romero.

Santiago Stays

Santiago Stays is the latest book of award-winning author and illustrator Angela Dominguez. Dominguez’s story is charming, delicate, and easy to read. Her narrative is about a young boy who tries to play with his French bulldog Santiago. The boy offers Santiago diverse colorful options like playing with a toy, going for a walk, and even eating a hamburger to captivate his attention. What the boy didn’t know is that Santiago had a very important job to do that’s why he could not play with him. When the boy lost control and became loud, his little sister woke up with a cry. As soon as she saw Santiago, she smiled. The boy now realized why nothing made Santiago leave his post. “Good Boy, Santiago” the boy exclaimed.

With engaging and simple text, young readers and listeners enthrall in the artwork illustrations created in pencil, ink, marker, and tissue paper.

Santiago Stays is a highly recommended book especially for pet lovers and families who enjoy great stories. Reading gives you wings! Visit your local library to emerge in the fascinating world of books.

December is here! A special and sweet way to share time with the beloved ones is through cooking. Oaxaca al Gusto is by renowned British author Diana Kennedy. Kennedy takes audacious readers to an amazing and delectable journey into one of the most colorful and one-of-a-kind cuisines in the world.

The southern Mexican state of Oaxaca is a complex and diverse region with a huge variety of flavors and gourmet dishes. The secret behind each recipe is reveal by Oaxacan natives. Kennedy travel from north to south and from east to west of Oaxaca to capture in words and by photograph the essence behind the three hundred recipes most of them from home cooks.
