“Luz de octubre / October Light” by Xánath Caraza

La canasta roja para pan está lista

Las manos de Nila no paran

Hornean felicidad

Beben chocolate

Y papel picado

Ya llegan, las almas descienden

Tan sólo esta noche

Nila descansa

Viejita de manos grandes

De pasos de azúcar blanca

Cuyas manos no paran

Hornean para las almas

Luz de octubre que revuelve el alma

October Light

The red bread basket is at hand

Nila’s hands do not stop

Bake happiness

Fold paper flowers for the altar

Weave yellow marigold arches

Embroider red butterfly tablecloths

Bells ring from afar

Announcing the hour upon us

Open the door

Here they come; they arrive

Copal smoke leads the way

Here they come

Their white sugar steps can be heard

Voices from the past

Laughter mixed with bells

Singing their concert

Announcing their arrival

The sun is lost among the stars

From the foggy mountains

The souls are descending

I see them

The town is full of happiness

The wooden doors are opening

For the loved ones returning tonight

Holding hands, together

Those alive and the souls

Drink hot cocoa

And colorful cut paper

Here they come, descending souls

Only tonight

Nila rests

Viejita with large hands

Of white sugar steps

Whose hands never stop

Baking for the souls

October light stirs in my soul

“Nocturno / Nocturne” by Xánath Caraza

“Nocturno / Nocturne” by Xánath Caraza

Nocturno

Para Superstition Mountain por Tom Weso Pecore

Recuerdos de filigrana de plata

Sobre las dunas del desierto

Noche morada que hiela el corazón

Luz negra que absorben los cactus

Efímera eternidad

Música nocturna

Viento del desierto

Sentimientos violetas en la vista

Los recuerdos se borran

Con la luz cegadora

Nocturne

After Superstition Mountain by Tom Weso Pecore

Silver, filigreed memories

On top of desert dunes of the

Purple night that freezes the heart

Black light cacti absorb

Ephemeral eternity

Nocturnal music

Desert wind

Violet feelings in sight

Memories fade

With blinding light

espera

su esencia

como serpiente de cascabel

Rustle in Her Memory

Like ivy, she comes to life upon the tree. Her growth a song of the forest. A rustling in the branches fills her belly with desire. She waits. She continues caring for her essence until the perfect moment. Her family tree expands and recalls ancestral tree trunks, the ancient branches that came before her. Gods of the Ceiba trees, rustle in her memory. Let the branches be heard like a rattlesnake. Let her lips be moistened, her mouth bite the flesh, and her pupils grow large.

The tree
waits
for her essence
like a rattlesnake

“Agítense en su recuerdo / Rustle in Her Memory” son parte del poemario Ejercicio en la oscuridad / An Exercise in the Darkness (Pandora Lobo Estepario Press, 2021) de Xánath Caraza.

“Jaguar” por Xánath Caraza

“Jaguar” por Xánath Caraza

Xanath Caraza

Jaguar

Canta en mi penumbra

e inunda de flores mi voz.

Que las voces de las abuelas

me arrullen en las noches sin luna.

Que tus rugidos resuenen

en la bóveda vacía de esta jungla.

Que se vaya la oscuridad,

los abuelos llenen de luz la mañana.

¡Trae poesía, Jaguar!

Y con ella el viento del sur.

In xóchitl in cuicatl enredada

en mi larga cabellera negra.

Viento dulce y aroma a jazmín

hasta mi adolorido corazón.

Que el norte, sur, este y oeste

escuchen tu sonoro canto.

Abrázame, Jaguar, envuélveme

con tus poderosas garras.

Xanath Caraza

Jaguar

Sing in my penumbra

and flood my voice with flowers.

May the voices of the grandmothers

lull me to sleep on moonless nights.

May your roars reverberate

in the empty dome of this jungle.

May darkness depart

and grandfathers fill the morning with light.

Bring poetry, Jaguar!

And with it the wind of the south.

In xochitl in cuicatl entangled

in my long black hair.

Sweet wind and scent of jasmine

reach my yearning heart.

May the north, south, east, and west

hear your resonant song.

Embrace me, Jaguar, cloak me

in your powerful claws.
