| "May the Force be with Her" by Eloy Torrez |
On October 11, I had the pleasure of attending the
opening celebration of an exhibit of the art and photography of Eloy Torrez and
Juliane Backmann at the Los Angeles County Library in East Los Angeles. The exhibit
(titled, “Turn the Page”) is curated by Dulce Stein in the Chicano Resource
Center at the library located at 4837 E. 3rd Street. It will run
through November 15.

Torrez’s works “are personal reflections on societal
complexities affecting human lives.”

Backmann’s photographs portray contemporary poets and
writers from various backgrounds. (I am honored to be one of the subjects of
her photographs.)
It was a lovely way to spend the evening: listening to
Eloy and Juliane discuss art and politics and literature. Kudos must be given
to the curator, Dulce Stein, and all the wonderful folks at the library. Please
make certain to visit the exhibit…and support your local library!
