In Many Latin American countries, but specifically Mexico, people celebrate El Día del Niño on April 30^th (The day of the Child). Fun activities are held to honor the youngest members of the Mexican society since early morning until the moon appears with her bright light over the starry sky.

Children around the world deserve the very best education, opportunities, and services in order to develop their full potential. By linking books to El Día del Niño celebration, the children of México and other parts of the world are engaged with literacy while having fun.

Book Fiesta! is a bilingual picture book written by award-winning author Pat Mora and majestically illustrated by Rafael López. Pat Mora’s exquisite text invites families to read books and enjoy its benefits while riding aboard a train, floating in a hot-air balloon or sailing with a whale. Reading is a magical journey towards success! Mora is the founder of the family literacy initiative El día de los niños/ El día de los libros; Children’s Day/ Book Day, now housed by the American Library Association (ALA).

Book Fiesta! brings families together to embrace friendship, culture and literature. Reading one book at a time creates a strong community of readers.

Renowned Salvadoran author Manlio Argueta is presenting this week in many universities around the San Francisco Area. I have the privilege to fly to San Francisco and to present with him at the DIA presentation at the Mission Branch Public Library. For me, it is an honor to meet Manlio Argueta. He is one of the greatest Latin American writers and an important universal voice in literature.

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day)

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

As celebrated by libraries and librarians, Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, a celebration which took hold in 1925 following the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. Each country selected its own day for the celebration with Mexico and many other Latin American countries choosing April 30.

In March 1996, while being interviewed in Tucson, Arizona, the author and poet Pat Mora learned about the holiday celebrated in Mexico. Realizing that the United States had nothing similar, Pat proposed linking Children's Day, the celebration of childhood and children, with literacy and bilingualism, creating a new holiday: El día de los niños/El día de los libros. 

With assistance from members of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, Mora further developed the concept and began planning for the first celebration, to be held on April 30, 1997. Other organizations, including MANA del Norte, a women’s group in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and librarians, including Oralia Garza de Cortés and Veronica Myers, quickly offered their support for the celebration. REFORMA later voted to endorse this celebration of family literacy and became a founding supporter and leader in promoting the initiative throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. On April 30, 1997, the first El día de los niños/El día de los libros celebrations were held in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Tucson, Arizona; and El Paso and Austin, Texas.

Later in 1997, the Texas State Library, under the direction of Jeanette Larson, produced a planning booklet to help librarians develop local programs to celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros. The first Día logo was designed by James Larson. In 1998, a grant was awarded from the Kellogg Foundation to allow the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) to develop a plan for a national campaign to disseminate information on El día de los niños/El día de los libros. By 1999, schools and libraries across the country were hosting their own celebrations and creating bookjoy for children from all backgrounds.

In 1999, Pat Mora and her family established the Estela and Raúl Mora Award in honor of their parents to promote El día de los niños/El día de los libros and in 2000 the first Mora Award was presented to Austin (TX) Public Library.

The American Library Association formalized its support for El día de los niños/El día de los libros in 2001 when the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) applied for and received a W. K. Kellogg Foundation grant to promote the concepts of El día de los niños/El día de los libros. As a result, ALSC produced a tip sheet for librarians who were launching their own events and a brochure that librarians could distribute to parents. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a second grant to ALSC in 2002 to produce and distribute another Día brochure, in Spanish, for parents. In 2002 and 2003 the W. K. Kellogg Foundation also funded Día projects in North Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. In Texas, the grant funded a statewide model and resources for Día, while the University of Arizona hosted a meeting of a Día National Advisory Committee. 

By 2004, El día de los niños/El día de los libros had become a tradition in many schools and libraries and found its permanent home with the Association for Library Service to Children.

In 2007, Target became the first official national sponsor of Día, providing funding for libraries to receive complimentary bilingual brochures about Día and mini-grants to help establish or enhance local programs at eight libraries. In 2008, Dora the Explorer, the children's television character who shares her  adventures in learning on public television, was featured on the Día poster, bookmarks, and brochures, bringing Día into the main stream of popular culture. Other national sponsors and partners have included the National Council of Teachers of English, Reading Rockets, and publishers like HarperCollins, Children’s Book Press, and Cinco Puntos Press. Support from these sponsors has included distribution of posters and other promotional materials, discounts for libraries purchasing bilingual resources, and the development of guides to assist in program development.

2011 marked the 15th anniversary, the Quinceañera, of Día, a celebration that continues to grow and reach more children and families. More than 300 libraries reported their activities through the ALSC Día database and librarians celebrated at a party at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA. Also in 2011 Dollar General Literacy Foundation supported fifteen mini-grants of $4,000 or $6,000 for the expansion of El día de los niños/El día de los libros in libraries that demonstrated a need to better address the diverse backgrounds within their communities.

Eager to point out that the importance of literacy, books and reading should not be relegated to a single day, promoters of Día adopted the motto “Día! Today and Every Day of the Year.” The celebration has grown up around the April 30 events, with many libraries conducting programs and events for much of April and May, as well as throughout the year.

In preparation for 2012 Día celebrations, ALSC added additional content and reorganized the Día website, with additional support from Dollar General Literacy Foundation, and continues to sponsor Día-related webinars. Hell, back then some of us couldn't even afford to buy grapes, so it wasn't such a sacrifice to stand up for the basic civil/human rights of those who provide our food.

If you've been out of that loop, you may be surprised to hear that the struggle is not over. And needs our support, again. Below is a message from UFWOC that deserves your read, if not more:

Please let Unified Grocers, a Forbes Fortune 1,000 company made up of over 3,000 independent retailers, know that as a purchaser of Giumarra's Nature's Partner produce, they have a responsibility to hold this company to higher standards.

You may be surprised to hear that Giumarra can get away with denying workers water or breaks during the hot summer months of CA's Central Valley, where temperatures climb to the triple digits. Not only is this a grave injustice, it is also illegal. However, this company has a long history of such violations.

State enforcement of the law has proven to be inadequate in protecting these workers. In order to be able to ensure their own protection, farm workers need union representation. Giumarra goes to great lengths to avoid losing any power over the farm workers toiling in their fields. In the past, they've harassed and intimidated workers who have tried to gain union representation.

In order to make sure that Giumarra cannot do this again, we need you to tell the buyers of Giumarra's and Nature's Partner's produce to demand this company uphold the law. Join Domingo in saying, "Si Se Puede!" Click here to send this message to them.

at Inglewood Public Library

Children’s Book Day, or Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros, will be celebrated with special programs at the Main Library on Thursday, April 30 in Inglewood. Children’s book authors Amada Irma Pérez and René Colato Laínez will present at this event which will also include crafts, refreshments, raffles, and book prizes.

Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros / Children’s Book Day is known throughout the country as a celebration of children and families. With its origins in the first World Conference for the Well-Being of Children held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925, Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros / Children’s Book Day is celebrated throughout the world. Mexico has a tradition of celebrating Día on April 30; in many cities of the United States, it is celebrated on a day during the month of April.

This year’s program features children’s book authors Amada Irma Pérez and René Colato Laínez. Amada Irma Pérez is an award-winning author and speaker, and a leading advocate of programs that encourage multicultural understanding. Her books My Very Own Room/ Mi propio cuartito; My Diary from Here to There/ Mi diario de aquí hasta allá; and Nana’s Big Surprise/ Nana, ¡Qué Sorpresa! are critically acclaimed and have been honored by several major Latino awards in children’s literature, including the American Library Association’s Pura Belpré Award, the Tómas Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award, and the América’s Award. Born in Mexicali, Mexico, and raised mostly in California, Amada Irma finds joy in sharing her books with readers of all ages during her visits to schools, libraries and conferences across the country.

Known by his students as “the teacher full of stories,” René Colato Laínez is the Salvadorean author of several bilingual picture books including I am René, the Boy/ Soy René, el niño (Piñata Books); Waiting for Papá/ Esperando a papá (Piñata Books), and Playing Lotería/ El juego de la lotería (Luna Rising). He is the recipient of the Latino Book Award’s Best Bilingual Children’s Book and the New Mexico Book Award for Best Children’s Book.

He writes for the Spanish-language magazine Revista Iguana and is a weekly children’s literature columnist for LA BLOGA (labloga.blogspot.com).
